My Approach
Hello, and welcome. You may have found your way here because you have been struggling with difficult thoughts and feelings and you are looking for someone who might be able to help.
There are so many different kinds of therapy these days and it can be difficult to know which is the right kind for you. I practice psychodynamic therapy which has been formed and honed with deep thinking and research since the early 1900s, beginning with Freud and his contemporaries. To this day psychoanalytic theories continue to deepen and develop as our cultures change and new neuroscientific understanding emerges. It has informed many of the short-term therapies that you may have heard of, including CBT, MBT and CAT.
The main difference between this therapy and those listed above is that it works in greater depth over a longer period of time in order to reach the complexities of our unique minds and experiences. It helps us understand our reactions to the world around us. This can result in a deep and positive shift in the way we process thoughts and feelings that endures after the therapy ends. It is not a quick fix, but a meaningful long-term commitment to change.
The aim is to find the heart of your discomfort, which can emerge slowly and sometimes unexpectedly over time. It can lead to an understanding of how events and relationships in your past might be affecting you in the here and now. It isn’t always easy; sometimes we face things that are hard to look at.
I provide a reliable, confidential space where I invite you to talk freely about anything that comes to your mind, whether that’s something from your past, something from today or something that you dreamed about, and we see where that takes us. This therapy isn’t rushed; it can be open-ended if you like. I won’t offer advice or coping mechanisms, which may feel uncomfortable at first; instead we work through the layers of your feelings and process them. It is a chance to understand yourself which can help foster a feeling of inner strength, acceptance and a sense of peace over time.
Psychodynamic therapy looks at the causes beneath symptoms and therefore people come for help with varied presenting difficulties from depression or anxiety to problems with relationships or work, from eating disorders, addiction or grief to traumatic events that happened in the past or more recently. This list is never exhaustive. Everyone is different and together we will try to understand all the parts of who you are.
There is a strong and growing evidence base which extols the long-term improvements in mental health that psychodynamic therapy can achieve, often continuing beyond the end of the course of therapy.
